Chocolate Avocado Mousse – So Creamy and Decadent

As those of you that know me know, I’m not the biggest fan of chocolate. (Although, I do LOVE this Flourless Chocolate Orange Cake). But in general, I like chocolate just fine. Really I’m more of a custard or cream and fruit-type of gal. I don’t crave chocolate like I know many of you do and if I do have a square, it’s mostly about the sugar rather than the chocolate-y flavour.

So you can trust me when I say, this Chocolate Avocado Mousse is ah-mazing! You know I’m not just saying that, it’s seriously rich, creamy and decadent. It’s also full of healthy fats from the avocado (plus B vitamins for energy) and coconut cream – yum! As well, you’ll notice I’ve used two types of natural sweeteners – dates and maple syrup. 

I find that the dates give it a rich, full, caramel-type sweetness while the maple syrup gives it a more intensively sweet flavour. I also like that the maple syrup gives you the opportunity to adjust the sweetness to your liking by adding a little more or less. Dates tend to be different levels of sweetness and some are larger than others so with the maple syrup, you can customize the sweetness to your tastebuds.

And before we dive right in, just a quick note on cacao. You will notice that I have used raw cacao powder. This is different from cocoa powder, and sometimes it can be tricky finding it at your local grocery store. You can try a health food shop or I like ordering mine online too. I use Organic Traditions or Giddy Yo Yo but whichever one you use, make sure its cAcAO not cOcOA. Confusing, right? 

What’s the difference? Raw cacao powder is made by cold-pressing unroasted cocoa beans. This process keeps the living enzymes in the cocoa and removes the fat (cacao butter). On the other hand, cocoa powder is raw cacao that has been roasted at high temperatures. This removes many of the nutrients and antioxidants.

Using cocoa is fine if that’s what you’ve got at home, just make sure it’s unsweetened. But be aware that cacao is a super food and boosts the nutrients in this delicious snack or dessert to another level. Speaking of dessert, let’s jump right in!

Creamy and Decadent Chocolate Avocado Mousse

Makes 4-6 dessert or snack-sized servings

Ingredients

2 ripe avocados
6 tablespoons raw cacao 
3/4 cup full fat coconut milk
4 dates, soaked in boiling water
1/4 tsp cinnamon
2 tbsp maple syrup (adjust a little more or less based on your preference)
Pinch of salt
Strawberries, washed and chopped

Instructions

  1. Boil about 1 cup of water. Remove pits from dates and soak in boiling water while you prepare the other ingredients.
  2. In a food processor, add avocados, cacao, coconut milk, cinnamon and salt.
  3. Process until very smooth. Taste and adjust sweetness with maple syrup.
  4. To serve*, plate mousse and add chopped strawberries.
  5. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!

*Best served chilled.
