I bet you’re wondering how this paleo hummus is going to give you glowing skin. Let me start off by saying, like many of you, I love hummus! It’s creamy, salty, garlicky, and has just the right consistency to make you feel like you’re eating food, without too much effort chewing.
But many people struggle to digest the main ingredient in hummus, chickpeas. Some people have made a connection between their digestive disturbances, bloating, gas and cramping with this tasty snack; others follow specific eating guidelines like the Paleo diet or have inflammatory conditions like Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis; and others still like to eat a variety of foods.
Whatever your reasons, give this Glowing Skin Paleo Hummus a try and you won’t be disappointed!
Now onto the skin glowing part. This hummus is made with pre-soaked sunflower seeds and lightly steamed cauliflower. Sunflower seeds are a total powerhouse when it comes to vitamins and minerals. Specifically, they are super high in vitamin E, one of nature’s best antioxidants.
The body uses vitamin E to fight free radicals, preventing the type of skin damage that leads to fine lines and wrinkles. Antioxidants are also vital in preventing cardiovascular disease, and reducing symptoms in conditions like asthma, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Next up is good old cauliflower. With the arrival of cauliflower rice, more and more people are consuming this aaah-mazing veggie! Cauliflower, as you can probably guess from its smell, is super high in sulphur-containing compounds. This is a goldmine for your liver! When you eat veggies like cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cabbage, your liver rejoices!
The liver is your main organ of detoxification. You can’t effectively process and eliminate all the toxins out of our body without it’s help. That’s why the liver plays a vital role in healthy, glowing skin. When a client comes to me with skin problems, the two most important areas we focus on are helping the liver do it’s vital detox work, and making sure the bowels are working properly to eliminate this waste.
That’s where this Skin Glowing Paleo Hummus has it’s third strike out! Sunflower seeds and cauliflower are full of fibre and water to help constipation by loosening and bulking up your stool to promote easy and effective elimination. This hummus is delicious with my Gluten-Free Almond Oat Crackers.
So without further adieu, give this Skin Glowing Paleo Hummus recipe a try.
Skin Glowing Paleo Hummus
1/2 cup raw sunflower seeds (pre-soaked)
1 1/2 cups cauliflower (lightly steamed)
1 medium garlic clove
2 tbsp tahini paste
2 tbsp olive oil
1/2 tsp Himalayan salt
1/2 tsp ground cumin
1/2 tso ground chipotle
2 tbsp lemon juice
Soak sunflower seeds for 4hrs up to overnight, in the fridge. The skins will float to the surface and can be strained away.
Chop cauliflower into equal florets and lightly steam for about 5min. You should be able to pierce them with a fork with a little effort.
Place all ingredients in a food processor or blender and combine until smooth. It may take a few minutes which will warm the hummus up so be sure to cool in the fridge before consuming.
NOTE: Once your hummus is combined, taste and adjust to your liking. You may need to add more salt for saltiness, lemon juice for tartness and tahini and spices for depth of flavour. Not all garlic cloves and lemons are created equal and some may be more potent then others. Tahini pastes also vary from brand to brand so be sure to play around until you have the right balance of flavours.
The colour, texture and flavour of this hummus greatly resemble a classic hummus. Plus it’s delicious, hearty and so nutritious! For a little twist, you could try adding half a steamed sweet potato. This will add a hint of orange colour and sweetness to your hummus. Let me know in the comments if you try it and how you like it!
